Hey everyone! Hope everyone had a great week. It has been a VERY up and down week for me, but has ended up much better. I'm hoping to ride this wave of positivity all the way through my first convention as I attend Big Lick Comic Con in Roanoke, Va!
Let's get on with the updates!
Chapter 1
Not much to say here except that I am starting to attend conventions in the hope of selling the book. I have been going on podcasts and some other places to talk about the book. I was interviewed by Gettysburg Connections this week and that was a great conversation.
However, the two biggest highlights came in direct reviews of the book. I went on a podcast called Two Dimension Podcast. I had reached out to them previously to see if they'd be willing to review the book. They agreed and asked me to come on. They had such nice things to say about the book and it really meant a lot to me.
The other review came in from my good friend Travis Jones of Blazing Defender Report fame! He also had some really kind things to say, and also some constructive cricitism which I really appreciated. Although he apparently accidentally cut open his shirt because I packed his packaged too tight haha, oops!
Chapter 2
I continue to try to get the Kickstarter up and running for 9/2! I also ordered some promotional materials!
Chapter 3

The weeks are going to be a little quieter on updates for a little bit I think!
Chapter 1
I am reshipping a few items because the post office has lost them. It's one of the more painful aspects of trying to have a small business. It can be incredibly frustrating at times, but unfortunately there's not much I can do other than to just eat the cost.
One comic shop did message me back about carrying the book! However, to speak towards last week's statement that I am not going to be reaching out to stores to carry the book anymore, I was responsible for the entirety of the shipping cost. So, if all the books sell, I'm making a little more than a dollar a book, which is less than ideal.
My first convention is in less than two weeks! Big Lick Comic Con in Roanoke Va! I ordered the last couple items that I'll need so hopefully my first con will be a good one!
Chapter 2
The kickstarter page is up and running! You can get to the save the date page by going to lycanbook.com.
While art is finished, the colored pages are continuing to come out! We got a finished page 34, with a few tweaks needed for pages 35-37.
I'm still working on getting the final cover for the book. We'll see how that goes.
This week I was on two different shows to talk about the first book and the upcoming Kickstarter. Drunken Rogues, part of the Laughing Rogues channel on Youtube and The Comic Cons Podcast on all your podcatchers. Chris on Drunken Rogues is actually pretty close to where I'm located and was super kind to me and the book. Nick of The Comic Cons Podcast was also a great guy who was incredibly kind enough to have me on and talk about the book.

Lycan: Solomon’s Odyssey Updates 7/17/22
Hey Everyone! Hope you had a great week!
Quite a busy week!
My dog Yoshi got spayed this week, so she's recovering pretty well. I've been holed up with her in our family room since Wednesday. I am getting pretty stir crazy, but I had to move all my stuff up to that room from the studio. It may be a few days until the podcast episode comes out! Sorry for the delay on that.
Chapter 1
I had my first order online! The website seems to be working just fine!
I decided to begin calling comic shops. I looked up a few videos to help with cold calling comic shops to sell your indie book. I made a list of every comic shop in PA and NY. Upon calling every single shop in PA (there's about 81), less than half said they sell indie books. That was actually pretty much what I was guessing going in. I emailed each shop a free PDF of the book, though sadly, I have yet to hear back from a single shop. I'll follow up within a week.
One shop I did speak to mentioned they used to really try to sell indie books, but there wasn't much of a market for it. They specifically said indie books above $5. Even though the price might be fair for the # of pages, new readers would not want to take a chance on a $15 book from a creator they didn't know, when they could buy 3 batman, spiderman, or iron man books that they do know.
While I get that sentiment, it is a bit of a downer. Add to that, none of the shops that I do have the book in so far have sold any copies. I may end up deciding to avoid shops all together if that trend continues. Which is a bummer.
Chapter 2
With the main art being finished, that leaves the coloring and the lettering. I received colored pages 29-33. They look great! I already sent some more pages given to me by the colorist over to the letterer. The colorist is estimating that the book will be finished with coloring in August.
The letterer said he is still trying to figure out how to change up the logo to match the style of the next book. With the style of the logo, it is a little too busy to add much to it. I gave a suggestion of simplifying the sub-title (Solomon's Odyssey) in order to modify that to match the theme of the book. He said he would give that a shot and get back to me.
No other updates for that book or Chapter 3!

Lots going on this week with Chapters 1 & 2!
Chapter 1
All the Kickstarter orders (aside from some people on vacation and one person who hasn't filled out their survey) have had their rewards shipped out! I love seeing the posts come in on twitter and elsewhere of people getting their goodies. So far, the reviews have also been all positive! I'm sure that trend won't last forever, but its a nice feeling while it lasts!
The website is up and running and we even had our first online sale! hiveheadstudios.com if you know anyone who might be interested in the book, I offer a free sample of the book on the site too!
I started signing up for conventions! I have booked quite a few in August, one in September, and then a few more between October and November. My first convention is August 6th. I'm very nervous, so fingers crossed!
I had my first signing this week at our local shop. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed. It was no fault of the store, they were lovely. It was just a matter of timing. We had the signing the same week as "Bike Week." Those of you familiar with Gettysburg during Bike Week can attest, if you're not into motorcycles, you avoid town like the plague until the following Monday. Aka tomorrow.
Chapter 2
The book is completely drawn! I just got page 60 in today! Now the book needs to be colored, and then finally it needs to be lettered. The only thing remaining at that point would be to finish the final 2 covers.
One cover is done, one cover is in production, but that leaves me with one mystery cover. Today at the signing, the shop owner Art suggested I reach out to a local artist who makes some of the covers for D&D books, as well as Marvel and DC. He is most likely way out of my budget, but I worked out a deal with Art that we would split the cost in exchange for him keeping the original art. I was fine with that!
I finished the script for the next Kickstarter video. Now I just need to buy like..20-50 feet of chains...
Once the video is done, that'll be one more step towards getting that launch page up and running. However, I rely heavily on covers for the Kickstarter art, so I'm hoping those will get done sooner rather than later.
Chapter 3
No real updates at this time. Not sure when production will begin, character sketches may start this year, but the meat and potatoes of the book might not get started until the beginning of next year.

A weekly update on the state of Lycan: Solomon’s Odyssey, across all chapters
Hello! Hopefully everyone is having a great week and 4th of July weekend (for those of you in the US).
Lots of updates for you this week!
Chapter 1
As I mentioned last week, the books arrived! I promised the backers of the Kickstarter that I would deliver all the rewards by the end of this week, and I did. For the most part.
While all the major rewards are out, save for a few people who requested me to hold them until they returned from vacation, there were a few smaller rewards missing due to my miscalculations.
I missed extras that were purchased, because Kickstarter doesn't do a great job of conveying that people bought extras unless you click on their individual names. That might not make sense, but if you are using the backer report to break down rewards based on reward tier level, it tells you nowhere in there that people bought extras. You have to individually click on every name to see that. Lesson learned for next time.
So, because of this, I was two shirts short. I talked with two friends that had the same size and they were kind enough to just wait for there's at a later date. I was also short on pins, which was entirely my fault. I misread my stretch goals and thought the pins were for a higher reward tier, so I was short about 30 pins. I've already rectified both issues by getting the ball rolling on ordering more.
All in all, there were well over 200 packages sent out this week, and my house hasn't fully recovered from me turning our record room into a shipping facility. I've ALMOST cleaned it up, but I'm feeling extra lazy haha.
Chapter 2
We received the finished drawn pages for 55 and 56, with the layout for 57. The book is so close to being completely drawn!
No coloring or lettering updates at this time, but I did speak with the letterer about possibly changing up the logo ever so slightly to have it be more in theme with the story of the book.
Chapter 3
No more updates on this book until production of book 2 wraps up. The script is finished and finalized. I did speak with the artist about the timetable for starting that book, he says page production may not begin until the beginning of next year, which could be problematic since the book is slated to be 50% longer. We'll have to see!

Let's get to the updates!
Chapter 1
I got a message from the printing company that the books are in fact now in the delayed state. When the books shipped I was told that typically its 6-8 weeks, but they are experiencing delays so it's probably another 2-3 weeks longer than that. This week marks 8 weeks, so we are now officially delayed. Until the books go onto a truck there isn't really a way to know where they are. So, PrintNinja offered to give me a week to week update even if there isn't anything up update. I signed up for that so we'll see! I'll let you know as soon as I know something!
I've been reaching out to podcasts in the hopes of getting the book reviewed, hopefully around the time I receive them or later. I've reached out to over 30 shows, but I've only heard back from about 6-8 of them. A little disappointing, but not completely unexpected. Self publishing is harder for a reason.
Chapter 2
We received layouts and then finished art pages for pages 47, 48, and 49. We also received two new colored pages for 24 and 25. There are no new lettered pages.
Chapter 3
The script is finalized! As soon as the artist completes page 60 of Chapter 2, he can begin working on character sketches for the next chapter!

Chapter 1
No shipping updates at this time!
Chapter 2
Art for pages 46 and 47 is finished! We are now 47/60 of the way through the art for the book, so we are so close!
Pages up to 45 have been given to the colorist, but we haven't gotten any new colored pages. However, we did get the colored version of the cover!
No new lettering pages.
Still working on cover #2 and trying to find the artist for cover #3.
The Kickstarter for Chapter 2 is continuing to advance as I try to get it up and running so that people can sign up for notification of when it goes live.
I have contacted around 30 podcasts about possibly reviewing book #1 in the hopes of being able to also drive new viewers towards book #1 and the Kickstarter. I am in talks with a handful so far as I continue to try to reach the others.
Chapter 3
The script for Chapter 3 is finalized! As soon as book 2 is finished, Chapter 3 will begin production! (At which point I'll begin writing Chapter 4).

I entered the next Kickstarter's information for rewards, as I finalized those. It will look similar to last years, with a few changes. I also have completely revamped the stretch goals! I just need some art before I can launch the page.

Chapter 1
The book is still somewhere in transit.
The jerseys have shipped, so when I receive them, that'll be the last reward (aside from the deaths in Chapter 2) I need before I have all of them.
I received the custom table cloth and retractable poster that I'll be using for conventions. They look amazing! I'm excited to set them up and get out there!
Chapter 2
We got the layouts and completed pages for 39-43. They look fantastic! Only a little more than a dozen left to go!
No updates as far as coloring or lettering goes.
Christian Dibari has started working on the cover. I also contacted another artist about another cover. For this book, I am thinking I would like 3 distinct covers from different artists.
Chapter 3
The editor is continuing to make edits as we move closer to finalizing the script!

Lot of updates!
Chapter 1
No news on the shipping of the book, it could still be on the ocean, or it could be at a dock. Unfortunately I won't know until it gets put onto a truck!
The jersey's are currently in production!
The custom table cloth and retractable poster just shipped so those are some of the last items that I'll need for going to conventions.
Finally, I got some news that there will be some construction coming soon on the website, so hopefully I can get that up and running so that I can sell the book online, and even offer a free sample.
Chapter 2
Planning for the next Kickstarter has gone into overdrive! I've been doing cost analysis of items and doing some pitching of reward levels and stretch goals. Rewards are somewhat similar to the first Kickstarter, but with some tweaks. Stretch goals, however, will be very different I think!
We received pages 36, 37, and 38 this week from the artist. We also got the layout for page 39.
We are still trying to finalized page 17 colored. It's close, but it needs more gore!
Lettering for pages 1-8 is now finalized!
The first cover is now in production!
Chapter 3
Script is in the final stages of editing!

I have lots of updates for you this week!
Chapter 1
Still no word yet on the books...but, I did find a place that would be willing to create the jerseys. I already designed and purchased them, so they should arrive before too long.
Chapter 2
We got the finalized page 35 in from the artist!
We also got pages 17 & 18 in from the colorist, but we have asked for a slight modification in more gore! For the scenes in question, sometimes more blood is better!
We also got the character sketches and first 8 pages done by the letterer!
Chapter 3
The editor went through the modified pages and gave them a very enthusiastic thumbs up to the weird grotesque stuff that I added. Now she will give the script one more read through for any missed edits and at that point, the script will be finalized!
Miscellaneous
I decided to do away with the previously mentioned Fathead cut out. The art didn't end up working out, so instead of spending the money to redo it, I'll put it on the backburner for next year! The art that was made will be used for something else, like stickers or something!
I got a custom table cloth and a retractable poster made for tables at conventions!
I also started analyzing last years Kickstarter, and started planning for this years.

We have pages completed up to page 35 as far as the art goes. There is one additional layout for page 36, but not the final art yet.

No updates, as the script changes are still with the editor awaiting another round of edits to ensure the script is finalized and ready for the artist.

Let's get to some updates!
Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey Chapter 1
The books are still in transit, and I won't have an update until it lands in the US, most likely. I went back and looked at the original shipping email and it states I won't get a tracking number until it arrives as they cannot track items while they're at sea. I'll let you know as soon as I know!
We got the colored version of the cardboard stand that we will use for booths at conventions. I uploaded it to Fathead, but after receiving the proof, it just wasn't the right size, so we will see what they come back with.
Chapter 2
We got the finalized art pages for 31, 32, and 33. They look fantastic, and I can't wait to see all these pages colored and lettered.
No updates on the coloring yet, as the colorist is juggling numerous projects.
Chapter 3
I incorporated all of the edits Steph, my editor, suggested. The big edit being to combine two pages together during one fight scene, in order to add an additional page in another fight scene. I think it worked out for the best and what I came up with is pretty grotesque. I think it's going to turn out amazing depending on what the artist can come up with.

Hey everyone! Hope you had a great week! Sorry for the late post, these past couple weeks have been absolutely nuts! Let's talk about some updates!
Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey Chapter 1
The book has shipped! Huzzah! According to the printer, it should take between 6-8 weeks normally to arrive, but with the pandemic, and a war, they said to add an estimated 2 to 3 weeks. So I'm hoping to have them sometime in June or early July!
I received the hats for the Kickstarter rewards last week too! That means there is only 1 reward that hasn't arrived yet. That single hockey jersey for my Chief Exposure Officer, Charles McFall.
Chapter 2
We received finished art pages for 29 & 30. We also received the sketches or rough layouts for pages 31, 32, and 33.
No news on the coloring or art front for the book itself, but we did receive the final file for what will be used as a cardboard stand out at the convention booth!
Chapter 3
I began going through the various edits left by my editor Steph. She did make one request that is a fairly sizable shake up in removing a page from one section and adding it to another. But for right now, as I have the time, I have been just going page by page and making the edits that she suggested.

Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey Chapter 1
I have finalized ALMOST all of the Kickstarter rewards. I should be receiving the replacement posters, hats, and tshirts this week. The only thing left will then be the 1 jersey, and therein lies the issue, because most places want you to order a certain amount of custom jerseys.
The book is still being printed and I'm hoping in the next week or two to hear that printing has concluded and the items will then be shipped to me.
Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey Chapter 2
I started creating the Kickstarter page which will launch on 9/2/22. Since I made Hive Head Studios an LLC I needed to create an EIN (tax number) in order to get that ball rolling. In addition I got a letter stating I need to buy an $85 employment poster for my house...because I need a poster to remind myself of my rights? Weird.
We received layouts for pages 26-28, and then got the finalized versions too! These are the pages where we start opening the world up to magic, so we had some back and forth in order to get the setting just right!
The colorist has received files up to page 22, and what will be the cutout stand for conventions. They said that hopefully they'll be able to have that back this week!
Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey Chapter 3
Unfortunately, due to work being a little crazy, I didn't get a chance to go over the edits that my editor completed for the rough draft of the book. This week may also be a bit crazy as I'll be prepping for my significant other's birthday this weekend!

Hey everyone!
I hope you had a great week! I managed to finish off my birthday ice cream cake...by myself...so I'm really wondering when its going to get warm so I can start running this cake off...
Anywho! Let's get to the updates!
Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey Chapter 1
I contacted the printer who said that it should be finished in the next 2 weeks, at which point I should reach out to them again. I also received some more of the Kickstarter rewards! I received the prints and posters this week. In the next week I should be receiving the t-shirts. So, little by little, they're coming in!
Chapter 2
Not a ton of updates. We did receive pages 24 and 25 from the artist, but no new colored pages.
Chapter 3
The editor finished with the rough draft of the script! She really liked it, and there were only a couple minor page changes in addition to the normal changes of grammar, spelling, or just wonky wording in dialogue. This week I'll get these edits back to her and we will begin the back and forth to finalize the script!
Chapter 4
I finished laying out...the layout! I need to start figuring out pages in order to finalize that, but I am not in a really big hurry to start working on Chapter 4 in earnest, since production for Chapter 2 hasn't finished, and Chapter 3 hasn't started yet.
In addition to all of this, I have started planning out convention booths, looking at various conventions within a certain drivable radius, and some items to make my booth stand out. This includes a custom Lycan table cloth, retractable posters for both Lycan and for Hive Head Studios, an animatronic werewolf halloween decoration that moves around and howls if you get close to it (just for fun) and a big card board cut out of Lycan's werewolf, for people to take photos with, or just to interest people to come check out the booth and the book!

Lycan: Solomon’s Odyssey Updates 4/3/22
Hey everybody!
Hope you had a great week.
It was actually that time of year where the Earth ran it's course around the sun, meaning I am one year older. It was a pretty good birthday, filled with lots of garbage food that means I'll have to work harder to get rid of it haha.
Anywho, let's get to what you care about, Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey!
Chapter 1:
Not much to report. Still waiting on the book to print, I'll probably reach out this week just to make sure everything is going smoothly. I did however begin to have a website put together with the help of my friend Nolan. I sent over some images to help create a site. This site will help to sell physical and digital copies, get a mailing list up and running, and just give a brief summary of the book.
Chapter 2:
We had the finished version of page 22 come in this week. We got the layouts for pages 23-25, and the initial draft of page 23. Depending on the feedback from my art editor, page 23 may be finished, or may need some minor fixes.
Chapter 3:
The editor continues to work through the rough draft of the script. However, she did mention on one of her shoes (Sketching Shakespeare) that she was working on the script and talked about her excitement for the project. Check out the episode to find out for yourself! She said that she should have the first run through done by the middle of the week, which will mean the back and forth will begin in order to get the script finalized!
Chapter 4?!?
I got bored at work and decided to start laying out the next book. I am in no rush and didn't get too far, but I figured I would include this here since I did technically start working on it.

Lycan: Solomon's Odyssey Chapter 1
Started working on the website where I'll have an email list, book info, and the store for physical and digital copies. The digital copies will end up being a little cheaper there than on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Continuing to research sales, marketing, and different avenues of distribution!
Chapter 2
No new pages from the artist this week, however I do have some pages from the colorist! We received pages 12-17 and they look fantastic!
Chapter 3
The editor began editing the rough draft and so far she seems to really like it! I'll be excited to pour through her extensive notes and continue to refine the script until its finalized and ready for production!

Lycan: Solomon’s Odyssey Updates 3/20/22
Hey Everyone!
I hope you had a great week! Mine was jam packed with book stuff, research, and updates!
For Chapter 1:
As it turns out, things were not ALL the way done. There was one error that needed to be corrected. One of the pages had the guides on them, which we couldn't detect, because the digital proof always has the lines on them. That was fixed and sent in. In addition the printing company had suggested a couple other changes to improve the quality of the print itself, at no additional charge (so far). I have really enjoyed working with PrintNinja. They have been fantastic!
I also spent dozens of hours researching publishing your own comic digitally and physically. I looked at print on demand, utilizing services like Amazon or Barnes and Noble, and a bunch of other resources. I have some ideas, but I haven't finalized exactly what I'm going to do yet. I'm more worried about getting the books to the backers first!
For Chapter 2:
I received more pages from the artist, all the way up to page 21! In fact, I received pages 20 & 21 this morning. A couple minor changes, but they've been approved and finalized!
